Bell Island, viewed from the Thousand Island House in 1908, sits in the St. Lawrence River among the islands near Alexandria Bay in Jefferson County, New York. By then the region had become a summer resort, drawing vacationers from New York, Philadelphia, and Montreal who arrived by rail and by river steamer. Hotels, cottages, and boathouses lined the shores, and the local economy leaned heavily on the seasonal crowd, along with fishing, boatbuilding, and guiding visitors among the channels. The river also carried the working traffic of the border, with commercial vessels and passenger steamers moving between the American and Canadian shores. In 1908, the islands were known to most Americans as a place to rest, boat, and spend a few weeks in the cool summer air.
