Piermont, a Hudson River village in Rockland County, New York, was in 1908 still shaped by the Erie Railroad, which had run its tracks out to a long pier on the river since the 1840s so that passengers and freight could transfer to steamboats and ferries. By the early twentieth century that rail link had lost much of its earlier importance, and the village was turning toward commuters, summer visitors, and small local trades. Fort Comfort, the inn pictured here, served travelers and residents along the river at a time when the Hudson was still busy with day steamers carrying people between New York City and towns upriver. Piermont's streets and waterfront were modest, and its residents knew the place mainly as a river town tied to the railroad and the water.
