Tannersville, in the Catskill Mountains of Greene County, New York, was a summer resort town in 1898, and the Onteora Bear-Fox Inn catered to the visitors who came up from New York City and Brooklyn to escape the heat. The village took its name from the hemlock-bark tanneries that once worked the surrounding forests, but by the 1890s the tanning trade had faded and boarding houses, hotels, and summer cottages had replaced it as the main source of income. Nearby, the Onteora Club, founded in 1887 as a summer colony for writers, artists, and educators, drew a cultured crowd that gave the area a reputation for literary and artistic life. Rail links from the Hudson Valley, including the Catskill Mountain Railroad, carried guests up the mountain to these hotels, so the inn's business depended on the steady arrival of summer boarders.
