Tannersville, in the Greene County hills of the Catskills, was a summer resort village in 1898, and its economy rested on visitors from New York City who arrived by the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. The village took its name from the tanning trade that once drew on the region's hemlock forests, though by the late 1890s the boarding houses and hotels had largely replaced the tanneries as its main livelihood. Residents who looked at this panorama would have seen a community that lived by the summer season, with its guest houses filling each June and emptying by early autumn. The nearby Catskill Mountain House and the grand hotels of the Kaaterskill area drew the wealthier travelers, and Tannersville's smaller houses served a steadier flow of families and boarders.
