Tannersville, in the Catskill Mountains of Greene County, New York, was a summer resort town in 1898, shaped by the hotel trade that had grown up around it over the previous few decades. Its name recalled the hemlock-bark tanneries that once drew workers into the hills, but by the late 1890s visitors from New York City were the town's main source of income. The Ulster and Delaware Railroad carried vacationers up the valleys, and hotels such as the Schoharie Mansion catered to families who stayed for weeks at a time. Guests filled the dining rooms and porches, while local residents supplied the labor, food, and lodging that the seasonal trade required.
