Hunter Village, in the northern Catskills of Greene County, New York, was a small mountain community in 1898 that depended on summer visitors more than on any single industry. Earlier in the century, the surrounding hemlock forests had supplied bark for the region's tanneries, but by the late 1800s that trade was fading as the timber thinned out. Railroad lines in the Catskills had made the mountains easier to reach from New York City and Brooklyn, and boarding houses and hotels were a steady source of local income in warm months. Farm families, hotel keepers and the people who served the summer trade made up the year-round population, and the mountains themselves were the main attraction residents would have known the village for.
