Tannersville and Haines Falls, two villages in the Greene County hills of the Catskill Mountains, were summer resort communities in 1898, living off visitors who came up from New York City and Brooklyn to escape the heat. The Ulster and Delaware Railroad's Catskill Mountain branch had brought rail travel to the area in the 1880s, and it carried guests to large hotels and rented boarding houses. Local life centered on those seasonal visitors, with farmers, tradesmen, and hotel workers supplying food, horses, and labor for the summer trade. Nearby Kaaterskill Falls and the surrounding trails drew sightseers, and the region was already known to city families as a place for cool air, walking, and long stays away from the city.
