Tannersville, a hamlet in the Catskill Mountains of Greene County, New York, sat along the Stony Clove and Catskill Mountain Railroad corridor in 1898, when the region drew city visitors seeking summer boarding houses and hotels. The Catskills had become a resort destination after the Catskill Mountain House and other grand hotels were built, and the surrounding farms and tanneries that gave the village its name were giving way to the tourist trade. Summer guests arrived by rail from New York City and Brooklyn, filling porches, dining rooms and lakeside walks through the warm months. For local residents, the village's identity rested on hospitality and mountain scenery as much as on its older industries.
