Hunter, a village in the Greene County towns of the northern Catskills, was in 1898 a farming and summer-boarding community that depended on the mountain air and scenery drawing city visitors. By the late 1890s the hemlock bark trade that had fed the region's tanneries was fading, so local families increasingly turned to dairy and produce for market and to renting rooms, cottages, and meals to summer guests. Visitors arrived by rail and by stagecoach over the mountain roads, and the village's hotels and boardinghouses ran through the warm months and then emptied in autumn. Residents in 1898 would have known Hunter as a quiet stop on the way to higher peaks and the old resort country around the Kaaterskill and Catskill Mountain House.
