In 1898, Elka Park was a young summer colony in the Greene County hills of the Catskills, a few hours by rail up the Hudson from New York City. Like many nearby communities, it depended on the summer trade that the mountain railroads had brought after the 1880s, when city families began renting cottages and boarding houses for the hot months. Life there centered on cottages, shaded lawns, walking paths, and the social calendar of a resort that drew professional families seeking cooler air and a quieter setting than the city. Across the region, the boarding-house and hotel business shaped local work, from carpentry and dairy farming to laundry, cooking, and hauling. The panoramic view records a community still taking shape, with its buildings and streets set against the wooded slopes that visitors came to see.
