In 1908, the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River in northern New York were a well-known summer retreat for wealthy families from New York City and other eastern cities. Alexandria Bay, Clayton, and Cape Vincent served as the main landings, where steamboats carried vacationers among the islands and linked the resort colony to the rail lines that ran north from the Great Lakes and the Hudson Valley. The river's islands had drawn large summer "cottages" and hotels since the 1870s, and by the early 1900s the fashion was for private estates, yacht clubs, and regattas. George Boldt's grand castle on Heart Island, begun around 1900, had been abandoned unfinished in 1904, a reminder of how quickly fortunes could shift in the resort boom. Summer residents of this house would have known the region chiefly for its boating, social calendar, and the steady traffic of passenger steamers on the river.
