Few trees in colonial America carried as much meaning as the great elm on Essex Street in Boston, which this etching depicts. In August 1765, protesters hung effigies from its branches, including one of Andrew Oliver, the man appointed to distribute stamps under the Stamp Act. The tree became a gathering point for opposition to British taxation, and other towns soon adopted the "Liberty Tree" name. British troops cut it down in 1775. The record gives August 1765 as the date, but the caption card itself carries none, so the exact timing is worth confirming.
