Stocks stand at the center of this scene, which shows public punishment carried out in the square before Boston's Town House around 1657. The original painting is credited to F.C. Yohn, and this color reproduction appeared in the Boston Herald's supplement of April 16, 1930. Public stocks were a common feature of Puritan New England, where the Massachusetts Bay Colony used shaming and physical punishment for offenses that included drunkenness and breaking the Sabbath. The image shows how closely the civic square was tied to both local government and public discipline in the young town.
