Bulfinch's granite-and-brick State House crowns Beacon Hill, and this view shows the building as Boston knew it in the early 1900s, with its gilded dome above the city. Governor Samuel Adams laid the cornerstone in 1795, and the building was completed in 1798 to the design of Charles Bulfinch, who shaped much of the city's early architecture. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely between the 1890s and the 1920s recording American towns, landmarks, and streetscapes for sale as views.
