This is an interior view of a chamber in the Massachusetts State House, the seat of state government on Beacon Hill, photographed around 1895. The building was designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1798, and its gilded dome became a familiar Boston landmark. Photographer N.L. Stebbins registered the image for copyright, so it was made for sale or publication as a commercial view. Interior photographs like this one, taken in the decades before flash photography became common, show the formal setting of lawmaking in the late 19th century, with its tall spaces, rows of desks and carefully arranged furnishings.
