The Massachusetts State House, perched on Beacon Hill above the Boston Common, is the subject here, shown as a steel engraving whose fine line work captures its brick facade and the golden dome that had been sheathed in copper. Designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1798, the building housed the state legislature and became a symbol of the young commonwealth's government. Steel engravings like this one were widely reproduced in the nineteenth century, so the print likely circulated in books, periodicals or souvenir views of the city. The caption card gives no date, but the style places it in that broader era of American city views.
