The Old State House, pictured here under the title "Original Town House of Boston, First State House of Mass.," is the oldest surviving public building in downtown Boston and stands at the head of State Street. Built in the 1700s as the seat of Massachusetts government, it later housed the colony's and then the state's legislature, and it is best known today as the site of the Boston Massacre of 1770, which took place on the street just outside. This c1936 print is a useful record of the building as it looked between the wars, when preservation of the structure was gaining attention in the city.
