Alvan T. Fuller, the subject of this 1918-to-1920 glass negative, was a Boston automobile dealer who later rose to lieutenant governor and then governor of Massachusetts. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed public figures and everyday scenes in the early twentieth century, made the negative, and it reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Glass negatives of this period often show streaks and blemishes where the original coating has deteriorated, and that wear is visible here. The title comes from unverified data the company wrote on the negative sleeves, so the identification is worth confirming against other sources.
