Titled simply *The sea shore*, this hand-colored engraving is dated July 1859 and presents women's clothing as it was pictured for a seaside holiday. Fashion plates like this were printed in quantity and colored by hand, so two sheets with the same design could differ noticeably in tone. By the late 1850s, coastal resorts drew fashionable families who wanted to show off the latest styles away from the city, and plates such as this one helped readers keep up with them. The sheet comes from the Daniel Carter Beard collection, now held by the Library of Congress.
