A hand-colored fashion plate from December 1842 shows four women in the styles of the day, and its date places it in the years when such plates were the main way American and European readers saw the latest dress. Fashion plates like this one were printed as engravings or lithographs and then colored by hand, often by a team of workers who applied the same palette to every copy. Pictures of this kind were bound into monthly magazines, where they guided seamstresses and gave ordinary households a window onto city fashion. Looking closely, you can compare the cut of the bodices, the width of the sleeves, and the bonnets, all of which shifted quickly from one season to the next.
