Godey's Lady's Book, the Philadelphia monthly, published this February 1855 fashion plate as an engraving that was colored by hand, a costly touch that set it apart from the plain prints common in magazines of the day. Louis Antoine Godey's journal was among the most widely read women's magazines in antebellum America, and its colored plates gave readers the latest styles to copy or show to a dressmaker. Colorists, often women working in workshops, applied the paint one sheet at a time, so no two copies came out exactly alike. The plate offers a useful view of how mid-century fashion traveled through print.
