Godey's Lady's Book, the best-known American women's magazine of its era, issued this hand-colored fashion plate for February 1862, and the engraving is credited to Capewell & Kimmel. Fashion plates like this one were the main way American readers saw the latest styles from Paris and New York, so the costumes show the wide skirts supported by hoops and the fitted bodices of the early 1860s. Color was added by hand, often by a team of women working from a pattern, which helped make each plate look fresh and fine on the page. Plates such as this one tell us as much about the social expectations of the Civil War years as they do about dress.
