Issued to promote the February number of Lippincott's, the monthly magazine published by J.B. Lippincott Company of Philadelphia, this 1897 color poster makes fashionable women's dress its central appeal. Its date places it within the American poster boom of the mid-1890s, when color lithographic advertisements borrowed the flat shapes and bold outlines of French posters and appeared on city walls and shop windows. Such images show historians as much about the silhouettes, sleeves and skirts of the period as they do about the magazine being sold.
