Hand-colored fashion plates like this one were the main way American women learned what to wear, and this February 1865 issue of Godey's Lady's Book shows the styles of the final winter of the Civil War. The plate was engraved by Kimmel, a New York craftsman whose work appeared in the magazine, and the color was added by hand, often by teams of women working from a standard palette. Godey's was among the most widely read periodicals of its day, so these figures carried real influence over dressmakers in towns far from the city. Look closely at the silhouettes and trims, which show how skirts and bodices were changing as the decade drew to a close.
