Fashion plates like this one were the main way American women saw the latest styles in the 1860s, and this April 1864 example was engraved by the firm of Capewell & Kimmel for *Godey's Lady's Book*, the Philadelphia magazine edited by Sarah Josepha Hale. Plates were printed in black and white and then colored by hand, often by teams of women working from a model sheet, so no two copies looked exactly alike. The wide, bell-shaped skirts supported by hoop frames that dominated women's dress in this period are the silhouette to look for in plates of this date.
