Four women stroll along a sandy shore in this hand-colored glass lantern slide, a format that projected images onto screens for audiences in the 1890s. The slide comes from the photograph collection of William Henry Jackson, the western photographer who was official photographer of the World's Transportation Commission during its around-the-world survey in 1894 and 1895. Hand coloring, applied by an artist working over the photographic image, gave the glass a soft, painted warmth that was popular in lantern shows of the period. The Library of Congress received the slide as a gift from William P. Meeker in 1971.
