This hand-colored engraving presents an evening dress as it appeared in the April 1836 issue, number 46, of the *Court Magazine*, a London periodical aimed at fashionable women. Fashion plates like this one gave readers their main view of current styles, and the color was typically added by hand, so each impression varied slightly. The mid-1830s silhouette, with a narrow waist, full skirts, and large sleeves, is what makes such plates useful to historians of dress today.
