Lake McDonald sits in the western part of Glacier National Park, which Congress had created in 1910 as a wilderness reserve along the Continental Divide in northwestern Montana. In 1915 the lake drew visitors mainly through the Great Northern Railway, which had built and promoted the park's hotels and chalets as a way to fill its trains with summer travelers. Tourists arrived by rail at stations such as Belton, now West Glacier, and then traveled by launch, horse, and automobile into the valley. The Blackfeet, whose reservation bordered the park to the east, were not part of this tourist economy in the same way, and much of the land was still reached by trail. For most people in Montana, the lake was known as a scenic destination reached by rail rather than a working place of industry.
