In 1915, Thompson Falls was a small Sanders County town whose name traced back to David Thompson, the British fur trader and surveyor who passed through the Clark Fork country in 1809. The falls that gave the town its name had begun to draw the interest of engineers who saw hydroelectric possibilities in the river's drop, though most families still earned their living from wages in the mills, the railroad yards, and nearby ranches. Life in town followed the seasons, with Saturday trade on the main street, church suppers, and a school year that ran through winters when the roads were hard to travel. Residents would have known the place as a quiet river town where the Clark Fork, the trains, and the mills set the pace of ordinary days.
