Missoula, Montana, in 1922 was a rail and lumber town that had grown well beyond its early years as a railroad stop. The Milwaukee Road had arrived in 1908, giving the town a second line beside the Northern Pacific, and sawmills along the Clark Fork still processed the timber cut in the surrounding mountains. Wholesale houses such as the Missoula Mercantile sent goods to merchants across western Montana. The state university, then known as Montana State University, occupied its campus on the hill above downtown, and its students and faculty were becoming a visible part of local life. Residents of the day would have seen the town as a place where the forest economy and the college were beginning to share the same streets.
