Livingston, Montana, was a Northern Pacific railroad division town on the Yellowstone River in 1922, having grown up around the rail line after it arrived in 1882. Its rail yards and shops, along with the travelers heading south to Yellowstone National Park, shaped daily life as much as any local industry. The "A.C.M. Co." on this mill carries the initials of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, whose main operations were in Butte and whose fortunes followed a copper market that had fallen sharply during the 1920-1921 recession. Residents would have known Livingston as a railroad and gateway town, where Montana's mining and timber wealth passed through on its way to markets elsewhere.
