Helena, Montana, in 1908 was a gold and silver mining town of about twelve thousand people, served by the Northern Pacific line since 1883. The Broadwater Hotel, on the city's northern edge, drew its reputation from warm mineral springs developed into a resort with a large indoor swimming pool, and visitors came from across the state to bathe and stay. Helena had kept the state capital after a long fight with Butte and Anaconda, and the new capitol, completed in 1902, gave the city a civic pride that residents often voiced. Locals knew the Broadwater as a gathering place for dances, society events, and invalids seeking the waters, even as copper was becoming the bigger source of wealth in nearby Butte.
