Helena, Montana, in 1907 was a city of roughly 10,000 that had shifted its wealth from placer and quartz mining toward banking, wholesale trade, and state government. The copper boom centered on Butte and Anaconda drew much of the territory's attention and investment, and Helena's merchants and bankers competed for business from the mining towns that now looked to Butte and Anaconda first. In October 1907 the Panic of 1907 spread bank runs across the country, and Montana's financial houses felt the strain as depositors and creditors grew nervous. Residents of the capital would have known their city as a place of substantial stone and brick buildings on the hillside, with an older generation of mine owners and newer professional families sharing its streets.
