Helena, Montana, in 1908 was a state capital more than four decades removed from its placer gold beginnings, and its economy now rested on banking, wholesale trade, and state government. The panorama shows a downtown pressed against steep hillsides, with church spires and stone office blocks rising above a grid of frame and brick houses. A year after the Panic of 1907 had tightened credit across the country, Helena's merchants were still feeling the strain, and the copper companies of Butte and Anaconda continued to set the pace for the state's money and politics. Residents would have recognized the scene as the seat of government, where legislators, lawyers, and bankers mixed on the streets with the families of older miners who had chosen to stay.
