Antelope, Montana, sat on the open plains of the state's northeastern corner in 1915, when the region was in the middle of a homestead boom. Families had arrived in waves after the federal laws of 1909 and 1910 opened larger claims, and most townspeople depended on wheat, oats, and livestock sold through the grain elevators and rail shipping points that tied the countryside to outside markets. Wheat prices climbed that year as the war in Europe increased demand for American grain, which encouraged farmers to break more sod and borrow against the next harvest. Town life centered on the general store, churches, schools, and the lodge halls where neighbors gathered between seasons. Those who lived there would have known Antelope as a place that depended on good rain and a steady rail connection, and many learned within a few years how quickly dry seasons could undo a boom.
