Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, Montana, was a fast-growing summer destination in 1915, only about five years after Congress created the park in 1910. The Great Northern Railway, which ran through the region, had a strong financial stake in drawing visitors, and it built the Lake McDonald Hotel and a string of chalets along the shoreline to house them. Travelers arrived by train at the park's western gateway, then rode horses, boats, and stagecoaches into the mountains. Photographers and publishers such as the Haines company of Conneaut, Ohio, sold views like this one to tourists who wanted a record of the lake's glacier-cut valley and its rugged peaks.
