Glacier Park Hotel stood at East Glacier, Montana, in 1916, six years after Congress set aside Glacier National Park in 1910. The Great Northern Railway, led by Louis W. Hill, built the hotel as part of a chain of chalet-style lodges meant to carry eastern and midwestern travelers into the mountains, and it brought in Swiss guides to lead horseback trips and climbs for guests. Ranching, lumber, and mining still anchored the economy of northwestern Montana, but the park was drawing more summer visitors each year. In August 1916, Congress created the National Park Service to manage the nation's parks, including this one.
