Butte, Montana, in 1914 was among the largest copper-producing centers in the world, built on the ore of the Anaconda and other mines that ran along the hill above the city. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company dominated local life, and its smelters and headframes shaped the town's economy, drawing miners from Cornwall, Ireland, Italy, and the Balkans. Butte's population had grown past 50,000 by the 1910s, making it the state's largest city, and its streets were known for saloons, union halls, and a lively, rough-edged civic culture. Labor tensions with the mining companies ran high in these years, and the mines were hazardous work, with frequent accidents underground.
