Columbia Gardens sat at the base of Butte, Montana, in 1914, when the city was among the largest mining centers in the American West. Its copper mines, especially those of the Anaconda company, made Butte one of the richest and most crowded places in the region, drawing miners from across Europe and beyond. The Gardens were a popular summer resort fed by the Columbia Gardens dance pavilion, picnic grounds, and a Victorian-era amusement park, where working families spent their Sunday afternoons. The park was also connected to the city's streetcar lines, which carried crowds up from the mining districts. In 1914 Butte was a city of labor disputes and sharp class divisions, and the Gardens offered a rare shared space for the men and women who dug its ore.
