Columbia, Missouri, and its state university stood at the center of this 1914 view of the campus. The university had opened in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi River, and by the 1910s it was growing as the state's main institution for teacher training, agriculture, and the professions. The Missouri School of Journalism, founded in 1908, had already drawn students and attention from across the country, and the campus was home to a mix of classroom buildings, dormitories, and the domed Jesse Hall that served as its visual anchor. Residents of Columbia and the surrounding Boone County knew the university as the town's chief employer and social center, and in the summer of 1914 its students and faculty followed the outbreak of war in Europe with the rest of the nation.
