Branson, Missouri, in 1914 was a small Ozark town on the White River, where daily life rested on farming, timber, and the railroad that had reached it about a decade earlier. The lake in this view, Lake Taneycomo, was new: the Powersite Dam at Forsyth, completed in 1913, backed water up the river valley to generate electricity and changed the look of the bottomland. Visitors were beginning to come for the scenery and fishing, drawn in part by Harold Bell Wright's novel *The Shepherd of the Hills* (1907), which made the surrounding hills known far beyond Missouri. Local life still centered on churches, general stores, and small farms, and the town had not yet become the tourist destination it would be later in the century.
