Columbia, Missouri, in 1910 was a small college town in Boone County, and the University of Missouri, chartered in 1839 and one of the first state universities west of the Mississippi River, gave it much of its identity. Its campus on the hill above downtown was the town's largest employer and drew students from across the state, many of them children of farm families who came to study agriculture, engineering, and law. Jesse Hall, the domed administration building finished in 1895, anchored the grounds and stood for the state's ambitions in public education. Railroad lines and the surrounding farms carried livestock, grain, and produce to market, so the university and the countryside were closely tied. Townspeople in 1910 would have known Columbia first as the home of the state university, and the campus's growth shaped the shops, boarding houses, and churches that grew up around it.
