This 1910 class portrait shows students from the school that now carries the name Missouri State University, which was then a state normal school in Springfield training teachers for the Ozarks. Springfield was a railroad town in those years, with the St. Louis–San Francisco line headquartered there and its shops providing steady work, while the surrounding counties depended on farming, timber, and nearby lead and zinc mining. Missouri's normal schools were growing in the early 1900s as rural districts sought trained teachers, so a graduating class like this one stood for that effort. Many of its members would likely have returned to one-room schoolhouses across the region.
