In 1910 the University of Missouri at Columbia was the oldest public university west of the Mississippi River, and it was the central institution in a town that revolved around it and the surrounding farms of Boone County. The university's College of Agriculture and its ties to the state's livestock and grain trade gave the campus a practical bent that matched Missouri's farm economy. Columbia was also served by rail lines that carried students, faculty and produce in and out of town, so the campus was never far from the outside world. Residents of the time would have known the place first as a college town, where the ringing of campus bells and the comings and goings of students set the rhythm of daily life.
