Kansas City, Missouri, in 1910 was a rail and livestock city of roughly a quarter million people, built where the Kansas and Missouri rivers meet. Its West Bottoms rail yards, stockyards and meatpacking plants moved cattle and grain from the Plains to eastern markets, and the Board of Trade downtown handled much of that commerce. Streetcar lines carried workers and shoppers between the office blocks and the growing residential districts to the south along the boulevards. An interior concourse like this one reflects the civic ambition of a city that wanted visitors and investors to see it as a major metropolis.
