Joplin, Missouri, in 1910 was the commercial center of the Tri-State lead and zinc mining district, which stretched across parts of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Mines, mills, and smelters on the town's edges drew workers and capital, and zinc ore moved out by rail to furnaces elsewhere. The Frisco and other lines converged on the city, which made it a shipping and supply point for the surrounding mining camps. Many residents tied their livelihoods, and their sense of the town's future, to the price of lead and zinc, and to the cycles of boom and slump that came with it.
