Thompson Falls, the seat of Sanders County in northwestern Montana, sat on the Clark Fork River in 1914, where the Northern Pacific Railway's main line gave the town its link to markets east and west. Lumber and timber were the valley's chief livelihood, and sawmills and rail shipping tied the local economy to the forests that rose on the hillsides around town. The county had been organized only in 1905, so in 1914 the community was still young, and its civic life centered on the courthouse, the stores along the main street, and the church and school gatherings of a small frontier settlement. Residents of the period knew the town as a railroad stop and a gateway into the Clark Fork country, a place where the river, the trains, and the mills set the rhythm of daily work.
