Livingston, Montana, in 1922 was a Park County seat and a Northern Pacific division town, though the mood there had soured since the wartime boom. Wheat and livestock prices had collapsed after 1920, and ranchers in the surrounding valleys struggled with debts they had taken on when prices were high. Merchants on the main streets felt the slump in slower sales, and the railroad's payroll was no longer the sure thing it had seemed a few years earlier. Automobiles were also starting to change how people reached the mountains and the park to the south, and local residents were beginning to watch the roads as closely as the tracks.
