The room in this picture is the Vice President's Room in the United States Capitol, a space near the Senate chamber used by the official who presides over the Senate. The photograph was taken around 1923 on a large glass negative by the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented government buildings, officials and everyday life in the capital in the early twentieth century. Interiors like this one show the furnishings and formal décor of a working government office from that period. The title and date come from the company's notes and from nearby negatives, so treat them as useful guides rather than settled fact, and note that streaks on the glass reflect aging of the original coating.
