Haskell Institute stood on the western edge of Lawrence, Kansas, in 1908, a federal boarding school opened in 1884 to educate young people from many Native nations. Students divided their days between classrooms and shops or farm work, learning trades such as printing, carpentry, and tailoring on the premise that such skills would prepare them for wage work. Lawrence was a modest city shaped by the University of Kansas on the hill above town and by several rail lines carrying grain, livestock, and coal across the state. Pupils arrived from tribes across the Plains, the Southwest, and beyond, sent far from home under a policy of assimilation that officials then defended as progress.
